Program Description:
Motivational interviewing (MI) is an effective communication technique that can be used to assist patients in modifying their cardiovascular risk factors and promote health behavior change. The premise of MI is that the patient is in control of their actions and the health care provider serves to facilitate and direct the interaction to help the patient take charge of their own health behavior change. This webcast will teach the principles and steps of motivational interviewing, and will include a case study approach so attendees can experience MI in action.
Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Describe and demonstrate the phases and principles of motivational interviewing.
2. Apply the principles of motivational interviewing with a case study.
3. Review pertinent research to determine the efficacy of motivational interviewing with a variety of patient populations.
Target Audience:
All health care professionals need effective communication techniques in their toolkit to work with cardiac patients in modifying cardiovascular risk factors and promoting health behavior change. This webcast is intended for a variety of health care providers, including registered nurses, exercise physiologists, advanced practice nurses, dieticians and any others who work with cardiac, pulmonary or peripheral vascular patients in a variety of settings.
