Overview: Each year, AACVPR recognizes the best, brightest and most innovative individuals in the cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation industry with the prestigious AACVPR Awards. The Awards Showcase will honor the recipients of the L. Kent Smith Award of Excellence, Michael L. Pollock Established Investigator Award and Thomas L. Petty Distinguished Pulmonary Scholar Award. Join us in celebrating the honorees' incredible accomplishments and enjoy short presentations from the honorees highlighting their achievements.
General Session - Medicare Rules and Regulations Update
Thursday, September 26 | 8:00-9:15 a.m.
Overview: This session will review the current Medicare rules for CR/ICR/PR/SET and preview the proposed 2025 Medicare rules for CR/ICR/PR/SET.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the intricate relationship between depression, malnutrition and cardiopulmonary conditions.
- Review psychometrically sound screening tools for identifying malnutrition and depression in CR and PR patients that are consistent with AACVPR guidelines.
- Explore evidence-based interventions that cardiopulmonary rehab staff can employ to address comorbid depression and malnutrition in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary rehab, including how a more flexible and creative approach can lead to better outcomes.
- Learn how a multidisciplinary approach to comorbid malnutrition and depression can enhance rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life for cardiopulmonary rehab patients.
Closing Keynote: The Optimism Bias

Speaker: Dr. Tali Sharot
Overview: A major goal of health practitioners is to improve clients’ well-being and change their behavior in positive ways. Learn which factors according to empirical findings have the largest impact on people’s wellbeing and behaviour, and why. We will explore how the brain generates a sense of happiness - from the importance of optimism and a sense of control to the impact of social factors - and how we can use this knowledge to make others and ourselves happier and healthier.

- Describe the optimism bias and how it impacts our behavior in positive and negative ways.
- Identify about key factors influencing human mental health and behavior.
- Identify suboptimal practitioner-patient communication strategies.
- Construct efficient behavioral change strategies.
About the Keynote: Dr. Tali Sharot: Dr. Tali Sharot is a leading expert on decision-making, optimism and emotion. Sharot combines research in behavioral economics, psychology and neuroscience to reveal the forces that shape our decisions and beliefs. She has written several award-winning books, such as "The Influential Mind and The Optimism Bias," and contributed to top-tier publications, including "TIME magazine," "The Guardian" and the "New York Times." Sharot currently divides her time between MIT and University College London where she directs the Affective Brain Lab. Her TED Talks have been viewed over 17 million times.
