Advancements in Pacemaker/ICD: Exploring the Role of Cardiac Devices in Rhythm Management and Exercise
August 12, 2025 | Noon - 1 p.m. CT
Presented by: Tamara Meyers-Laplace, MSN, RN; and Dean Engle, BSN, RN
Advancements in cardiac and other implantable medical devices have led to increased complexity—and sometimes visual similarity—among various technologies. This webinar will help attendees improve their ability to identify implantable cardiac rhythm management (CRM) devices, gain a general understanding of their functionality and how they differ from other implants, and explore the mechanisms of action for various rate response sensor types, particularly in the context of physical activity.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify and differentiate common types of implantable cardiac devices (e.g., pacemakers, ICDs, CRT devices) by interpreting key device markers and recognition techniques relevant to cardiac rehabilitation settings.
- Describe current pacing strategies, including traditional right ventricular pacing and newer approaches such as conduction system pacing (His bundle and left bundle branch pacing), and explain their clinical implications for exercise programming.
- Explain the function and types of rate-responsive sensors used in modern implantable devices (e.g., accelerometer-based, minute ventilation, blended sensors), including how these sensors modulate heart rate during physical activity.
- Evaluate how various physical activities influence rate response sensors, and identify which movements or exercise modalities may under- or over-stimulate these sensors, potentially impacting exercise tolerance and safety devices, ensuring optimal cardiovascular response and patient safety in cardiac rehabilitation programs.
